Each mission card grants the player a specified number of operations points to reach certain objectives. Operations points are expended to recruit the special ops team, then to move and attack on the map. A deck of event cards controls the opposition forces (OPFOR). Combat is resolved using a quasi-tactical system with opposing units taking turns firing at one another. Victory can increase the number of operations points available, but heavy losses can reduce them. Buell was forced to seek out Bragg although his army was inexperienced. Outside Perryville, the two armies blundered into each other. A short but brutal battle followed that left neither side satisfied. The Union failed to utilize their numerical advantage, while Bragg withdrew from Kentucky. The Rebels dubbed their force the Army of Tennessee and the Union called theirs the XIV Corps. The Union was led by William Rosecrans, one of the war's best commanders. With offensives in Virginia and Mississippi failing, Rosecrans was pressured into making a premature winter push. At Stones River near Murfreesboro the armies fought a three day battle. The Confederates nearly won, but were forced back. The defeat relinquished some of the best farmland in Tennessee and an area that was heavily pro-Confederate. More importantly, the defeat led to a series of recriminations in the Confederate high command that poisoned the army. The Union received a desperately needed morale boost. The Battle of Narva took place in 1700, as Russia and a Saxon-Polish contingent aimed to push Sweden out of the Baltic, with the Saxons threatening Riga and the Russians besieging Narva. But it was November, and Peter left his army feeling secure that his 40,000 men could bottle up and capture the 2500 Swedes holding the city. Charles rushed to relieve the city with an army that was well-drilled and well equipped, but numbered only about 8000 men. So, including the troops in the city, he would be attacking at something like 1-4 odds. And attacking in a blizzard. But the surprise and wretched weather worked to his advantage, and virtually the entire Russian army was killed or captured, along with their artillery and equipment. How is it different from Operations and the Operations Special Issues?

This is best explained in the following MMP News posting from this website:

A question we have been receiving recently is what's the status of Operations magazine.

With the success of Operations Special Issues, coupled with the slight monetary loss which happens with the release of every non-SI Operations, we have decided upon the following course of action:

We intend to release a magazine once a year which will contain content similar to the Special Issues (i.e., variants, new smaller games, etc.). There are a lot of reasons why we decided to go this route, but we believe this puts us in the absolute best position to put out a "house mag" on a regular schedule with contents that may interest most gamers who support MMP with their purchases.

We have changed the name of the magazine to "Special Ops," as we can't keep calling it a "Special Issue", nor do we feel we can we keep calling it "Operations" since its so radically different in content. The release date will be roughly around our largest convention - the World Boardgaming Championships (in other words, approximately August). Content will be in the neighborhood of 40 pages, with two small or one "standard" games or variants (1 map, 1 countersheet, rules). We will be supporting all of our games through this magazine (although obviously each magazine can't have content on everything we produce!)

ASL Journal 13 is a 52-page magazine for Advanced Squad Leader and features articles, the latest errata and scenario updates in the Debriefing, 33 new scenarios printed on cardstock (including four “pocket” scenarios, with the map board included on the card), ASL board 77, and overlay X20 (to replace the version that came in the ASL Overlay Bundle).

ASL Journal 13 articles include:

Hatten In Flames: CG I Impressions wherein Gary Bartlett & Mike McGrath discuss approaches both German and American players might take in tackling this Campaign Game.

In (Not So) Free Parking, Phil Palmer uncovers some facts about Hull Down positions and how valuable they may actually be to your AFV.

Advanced Nuggets 2 finds Paul Sidhu & Rich Spilky illuminating even more obscure and easily overlooked rules.

Radio Contact Essentials offers a primer by Rich Spilky on the basics of this critical element of ASL OBA.

Second Impressions finds Rich Spilky musing on OBA draw pile probabilities in this extension of Robert Medrow's essential article in THE GENERAL (and ASL CLASSIC) on OBA in ASL and providing a basis for the “Pleva variant” for OBA chit draws.

Alternative OBA Systems by Jim Bishop explores additional chit replacement methods in this follow-up to Rich's draw pile article.

Ken Dunn gives us a Preview of the Drop Zone: Sainte-Mére-Èglise Historical ASL module.

Forgotten War Designer's Notes author Kenneth P.
